Defining What Emergency Care Really is

Emergency care is usually received in the emergency department/room of a hospital. However, some individuals will receive care while in transport to the hospital via emergency medical services. In these settings, physicians or emergency personnel treat patients suffering from acute injuries or illnesses requiring immediate medical attention.

Emergency room physicians do not generally provide continuing or long-term care. These physicians diagnose an assortment of illnesses and commence acute interventions in an attempt to stabilize their patients.

Today, emergency medicine includes significant amounts of surgery and general medicine. Emergency Room physicians care for large numbers of patients. They treat their ailments and then arrange for disposition. These patients will either be admitted into the hospital or released after receiving the necessary treatment.

Emergency Room physicians require a broad range of skills and knowledge. Many of these skills would otherwise require a specialist. These physicians need to have skills in trauma resuscitation, surgical procedures, advanced airway management and cardiac life support.
